Another Wednesday, another Timmy

Wednesday, March 17th, 2004

What is a Timmy I hear you ask, well it is the nickname of the passenger flight from the UK. Don’t ask me why it is called a Timmy as I do not know, all I know it was called that since my first detachment here. Also, the cargo plane from the UK is called a Tommy.
The walks are long when travelling down the endless corridors, and now the only amusement I had has gone :( . Three corridors up, I used to pass the adjacent rooms of a Private Butt and a Cpl Head. This meant when I went from my room towards work it read Head Butt, and on my return Butt Head. I know it is not much to get excited about, but it kept me happy!

This, that, and the other…

Tonight I played in a 5-a-side football competition, we got to the final but lost 3-2, we were winning 2-0 at one stage…
Yesterday I got absolutely soaked as it was raining cats and dogs. The weather lately is typical Falklands weather, ie the four seasons in one day. What to wear, what to wear :P
Anyone who knows me knows I am allergic to cats. The strange thing is down here I am not, also other people who are allergic are not affected done here. Now the cats are your run of the mill cats, I am allergic to cat fur and I assure you they are not bold! My theory is, and it isn’t a new theory, that modern industralization causes most allergies and as the Falkland Islands is not an industralized country (or modern  ) I am not not affected. If you disagree please write to me on a postcard to the usual address, or you could use the comments option (or ‘No Comments’ ) below to post something.
Anyway time is running out, speak to you soon.

Byron Heights

Friday, March 12th, 2004

Hello world! How are you today?
I am currently at Byron Heights, I am here on a ‘liasion’ visit. OK, this involves drinking beer but those are the breaks. We flew up yesterday after my last night shift, all of us being completely knackered. After lunch two of us decided that it would be a good idea to hike to ‘Stone point’. Normally this would be a pleasurable stroll, but due to my tiredness it was more of a slog.
Wednesday night Jet did his disappearing act again, we were looking for him high and low but to no avail. It got to 6 in the morning when we could hear meowing in a back office, so again we searched crying out ‘Jet’ as we went. It soon became apparent that the cat was under the floor boards and could not get out again. So we had you do another rescue mission!

A sailors life not for me

Todays planned boat trip was cancelled, properly due to bad weather. I tried to get some more sleep as I was between nights but to no avail  To much noise in the corridor, look at me always complaining!
Our section cat, Jet, went AWOL for 20 hours yesterday, some new people who work in the same building let her out not knowing that she has to stay inside for the immediate future. The cat is waiting (of course the cat doesn’t know she is waiting!) for an operation so there are no little miss and master Jet’s running about the place. Also she doesn’t know the lay of the land yet (mainly wet and boggy). The cat did a runner and nearly got run over by a land rover. It was 3 in the morning when her wails woke up a Turners contractor. He knew the cat was ours as we have been searching for her, and made radio appeals. His plan was to bring her back in the morning, but Jet would not let him sleep so he brought her over immediately. Jet was so hungAry and pleased to see us that I don’t think she will be running off in the near future :P
Bye for now

The rain in Spain Mainly falls here!

Well the weather has been thundering and lightning, which is good to watch, but not so great to travel through!
On Wednesday I might be going on a boat trip around Mare Harbour (a local harbour), it only costs £1 and you get to see loads of wildlife. Of course I am between nights again but all the good trips seem to occur during this time! Also after the last night shift we, the watch, are flying to Mount Bryon Heights for a night to see what it is like, this is the only mountain site where I have not been. So a tiring few days for little old me ahead, still makes the time go quicker!

The plane from good old Blighty has arrived within the last hour, so my ever going quest for mail has started again.
Bye for now.
